A trip down memory lane

After packing and cleaning all weekend, I did my walk-through at my apartment Monday. It was very strange to see the apartment that way - empty and bare. But to me it will always be full of memories.
Here are some of my favorites...

My first "home"!

Old roommates reuniting!
First few months, I slept on an air mattress...it was interesting...

slowly making it home

Many meals, games, and crafts were held at this table!

It snowed!!!

Caroline, Anastasia is loosely based on a real story! *insert shock and awe*
Many cups of coffee were had here!

Watching "Grease Live"!!!!

Having friends over was definitely my favorite thing about my house!

When you both decide you need to eat the last of the pie in the fridge at the same time! #froomies

Also, lots of papers were graded here...lots. and lots....aaaaaaand lots.

This is where my "Once Upon a Princess Party" deal got started...many princesses got ready here!

Sojourner

Sojourner: (noun) "A sojourner is a person who resides temporarily in a place."

This world is not my home.

At times, that is a very difficult concept to wrap my mind around. I love this world and the people and things in it - because it is all I have known. But we were not made exclusively for this world. In fact, all we know (this world) is a drop in the bucket compared to what we were really made for! Eternity - forever and ever and ever. Unending. Everlasting.
That is what awaits us after death. And there are two options: eternity in heaven with God, or eternity in hell without God. The first will be glorious and wonderful! The second will be the most unbearable thing ever.
But, we were not made for this to be our eternal home. Earth is not eternal...we are simply passing though.
And do you know what helps remind you of this idea? moving.
Displaying IMG_0042.JPG Yes, moving forces you to let go of unnecessary things. You loved those things, yes, but they are still unnecessary in the grand scheme of it all. Let me just tell you that the last load of yard sale stuff I took out of my house was painful. Tears were shed. Not over the things, but over the emptiness that was left behind in the apartment without those things.

Displaying IMG_0045.JPGThe things I took were part of my everyday life and have been for almost 3 years. The things I took were what made this house "home": a shoe rack (I love shoes), an over-the-door hook that my robe hung from daily, various mirrors, and almost everything from the mantle (this is where the major tears were shed).

But...as the emptiness settled in, the words to Carrie Underwood's song "Temporary Home" started echoing through my mind.

"This is my temporary home
It's not where I belong
Windows and rooms that I'm passin' through
This is just a stop, on the way to where I'm going
I'm not afraid because I know...
this is my
Temporary home."

Praise the Lord that this [earth] is my temporary home!! I am so thankful that God chose to remind me of this, even during an unpleasant part of beginning a new chapter (the ending of an old). Things, home, what you imagine "life" looking like - those can all become idols very quickly - and sometimes it takes letting go of those things to remember what is important! Letting go of things that aren't eternal - keeping my eyes and heart fixed on eternity and what truly matters.

"But this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Phil 3:13-14

This world is not what it was meant to be
All this pain, all this suffering
There's a better place
Waiting for me
In Heaven

Every tear will be wiped away
Every sorrow and sin erased
We'll dance on seas of amazing grace
In Heaven
In Heaven

I'm goin' home
Where the streets are golden
Every chain is broken
Oh I wanna go
Oh I wanna go
Home
Where every fear is gone
I'm in your open arms
Where I belong
Home

Lay down my burdens, I lay down my past
I run to Jesus, no turning back
Thank God Almighty, I'll be free at last
In Heaven
In Heaven

I'm goin' home
Where the streets are golden
Every chain is broken
Oh I wanna go
Oh I wanna go
Home
Where every fear is gone
I'm in your open arms
Where I belong

Blinded eyes
Will finally see
The dead will rise
On the shores of eternity
The trump will sound
The angels will sing
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

I am
Goin' home

"But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation." 1 Peter 2:9-12

Lecrae said it well - we are aliens.

"But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ," Phil 3:20

So take heart!
This world is not our home, but that's because something even better is waiting for those that trust in Jesus!

And if He calls you...sell some stuff to reset your thinking...*wink*

The light at the end of the tunnel...and it's not a train! (e-mail from a few weeks ago, in case you didn't get it)

The light at the end of the tunnel...

"Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert."
Isaiah 43:18-19

How the Lord continues to work

I just wanted to thank you for praying as the Lord continues to work! I stand in awe and wonder at the power of our Lord!!
In my support-raising training, I was challenged to look at my financial goal not merely as a budget to live on, but the finances to meet my ministry needs. We were told, "Raise enough funds to maximize the fruitfulness of your family and ministry." It's not about what I need to live - it's about what is necessary to further the kingdom and win the war...at all costs.
“Risk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. Dream more than others think is practical. Expect more than others thinks is possible.”
A West Point Cadet
The journey is not over, it is only just beginning! But I am so excited to see how the Lord has provided for each step along the path. I can't see much more than a few steps in front of my feet, but I am trusting that Jehovah -  the One who never changes - knows all, sees all, and is fully in control.

"Now unto HIM that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto HIM be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen." Eph 3:20-21
Accreditation is over!! Thank you for all who prayed last week. Please continue praying that we finish the school year strong!

90%

I'm so excited to say that I am at 90% support! That means my $3000 monthly budget is almost covered - I only lack $300 dollars monthly support!!! Thank you, family of God, spread all around the country, for investing in HIS ministry!! May HIS blessings flow down on you as you continue to be faithful!
It doesn't matter what amount you've given or how you have partnered with me, God WILL bless you!! Know that I am beyond thankful for your generosity and if I could hug each one of you, I would!! Stay tuned for more updates! Soon I will be able to purchase my ticket!!! Yay! Please continue seeking the Lord and asking Him how you can be part of what He is/will be doing at ICSB!

Because He lives...

http://www.cmq.org.uk/CMQ/2013/Feb/pics/crucifixion.jpg

"Because He lives" by Bill and Gloria Gaither used to be one of those songs that I would sing, but didn't really enjoy. It just seemed...boring. But as I've grown (age-wise and spiritually), the words hold more meaning. Life has happened - good and bad - and I've learned a lot from the ups and downs that I (and people I love) have been dealt.
During the past week, as Easter approached, I have heard many sermons, and read devotionals and articles about the death and resurrection of Christ. This is such a pivotal part of our belief system.

If Christ didn't die for our sins, then we still owe the debt that we could never pay because of our imperfections (Hebrews 9:22 says "and without shedding of blood is no remission"). But, thankfully, He did - and His Father had to turn away because Christ was covered in all past/present/future sins...of the entire world. Hence the reason Christ screamed out on the cross "My God! My God! Why have you forsaken Me?" (You would too, if you were bearing all the wrath of God for all the sins of man)

And if Christ didn't rise from the dead, then our belief system would be equal to all other religions. All the other leaders of world religions eventually died. Christ did, in fact, die...but He didn't stay dead. No other religion can claim that. Christ is the only one who resurrected Himself (literally, no one but God is capable of self-resurrection)! He was seen by many, in many places; He partook of food, and His disciples also touched His hands, feet, and side.

So, those two things are vital to our hope and belief in eternal life!

And He did all this...all the agony, all the excruciating pain, all the tears and heartache...for you.

Jay Wolf, my pastor, said it like this: "I am Barabas."At first, I didn't understand. Then he outlined this picture (the basic story was Jay's, but I embellished, because I love to paint mental pictures):
It's cold and dark in the cell. Barabas knew he would die soon. And he deserved it. He had done many wicked things. He knew what awaited him - a cruel and painful death, probably on a cross. Suddenly, he heard the scraping sound of a Roman soldier's hobnailed sandals start down the corridor. He shrank back in the cell, breathing hard. This was it. This was the end. He would face the punishment for the crimes he had committed. The door flung open and the guard called, "Barabas!" Barabas did not want to answer, but he knew it was only a matter of time. "Barabas!" the guard called again, "You are free to go!" Barabas stood in shock. There was no way this was really happening! The guard repeated what he said again. Barabas slowly walked towards the open door of the prison cell. As the Roman soldier escorted him out of the prison walls, Barabas was about to ask why he was being set free when he heard a tumult in the streets. "What is going on?" he asked the soldier. A ferocious mob of people were pushing and shoving in the street. There were people in the middle of the mob, but Barabas couldn't see well enough to know what was going on. The soldier grimly said, "They are crucifying three men today." Barabas was shocked. That was supposed to be him in the mob, on the way to being crucified. And yet, somehow, he was the one being let go. But also, the mob seemed especially angry. Angrier than he had ever seen. "Why are they so angry?" he questioned. The soldier shrugged and pointed to one of the men. "He says that He is the Son of God." Barabas turned and looked. He saw the man they called Jesus, struggling under the weight of His cross. His back was bloody and torn. He had a crown of thorns pressed down into His head. Barabas grimaced as a soldier shoved Jesus and He fell to the ground. Barabas had heard of this man. And all the things he had heard made Jesus seem like a good man. Not one who deserved to die on a cross. "Why would they crucify Him?" Barabas asked in shock. "I've heard of Him - He's done nothing but good things!"

The soldier shrugged again, indifferent to the injustice. "He took your place."
I am Barabas. You are Barabas.
None of us deserved to be saved. Not a one.
There is no one "good enough" to have deserved what Christ did.
But that's the beauty of GRACE! We don't deserve it, yet we are offered it...out of love. Once you accept it, it's up to you what you will do with it. Use that privilege wisely.
"He died for you, so live for Him!"

God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus;
He came to love, heal and forgive;
He lived and died to buy my pardon,
An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives!

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy he brings;
But greater still the calm assurance:
This child can face uncertain days because He Lives
!

And then one day, I'll cross the river,
I'll fight life's final war with pain;
And then, as death gives way to victory,
I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He lives!

Chorus
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives, all fear is gone,
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
Just because He lives!
This last part - this life is worth living just because He lives - really hit me on Sunday.
This {insert what you are dealing with} life is worth the living just because He lives!
  • single life...
  • divorced life...
  • hurting moment...
  • difficult parenting life...
  • physically damaged life...
  • hard-to-see path...
  • painful life...
  • life without loved ones...
  • not-as-wealthy-as-you-thought-you-would-be life...
  • struggling in school life..
...It's all worth living just because He lives!

Keep pressing on, through whatever life brings your way, because Christ died for you, and that makes life worth living!!

last e-mail

I apologize in advance! I am still learning how to do the e-mail newsletter (it's taking me a lot longer than I expected...yikes). Sometimes it might be sent to your junk inbox so check that if for some reason you aren't getting it. I have had a few e-mails "bounce" and I am currently trying to figure out how to resolve that. I am going to copy and paste the next several e-mails to my blog, in case someone still isn't receiving the e-mails.
****Please e-mail me at hhocutt@teachbeyond.org if you realize that you haven't gotten the e-mails!!!

This was my last e-mail that I sent out March 16th!!

Fully obey - and trust.

"God does not want your excuses but your obedience."

Trusting in the Faithful One...

The Lord remains faithful, even when I struggle. The last several weeks have been very exhausting mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. My enthusiasm and "joy" were apt to wain as the moments got tougher. I say "joy", because it was really happiness. JOY is a choice. Happiness is dependent on your circumstances. JOY is what you choose to feel regardless of your surroundings and environment. JOY is a fruit of the spirit, because it does not come naturally to us as fallen humans. JOY is a choice.
"And my soul shall be JOYFUL in the Lord: it shall rejoice in His salvation." Psalms 35:9
God, the Faithful One, Jehovah, my Abba Father, is the only One capable of being the source of my joy. He is the only steadfast, unchanging, immovable thing in my life. Praise the Lord!
Three songs have sweetly ministered to my weary soul this week: "Faithful One" by Selah, "Shoulders" by For King & Country, and "Even if" by Mercy Me. The common thread - HE IS FAITHFUL.

God continues to provide!

Since I started raising support in January for my next two years, the Lord has provided! My monthly budget for the 2 years is 51% covered!! Praise the Lord - and thank you to all of you who have invested in my ministry! If you would like to know more, please e-mail me or call me! I would love to talk to you!

My current classroom

We have spring break next week (praise the Lord), but I will be busy meeting with people and preparing for accreditation. Please be praying for us the last week in March as we have our site visit for accreditation! Please continue praying for me as I invest in my students. Recently we have been talking about what Easter means, so pray that the Lord will begin a new work in their young hearts!

A *vulnerable* flashback

I am a pretty transparent person. I have lots of emotions. I wear them on my sleeve - well, more like my face, but you get the picture. This post is going to be a very open look into my heart.

One year ago, almost to the day, God began stirring in my heart the idea of moving overseas to teach. Wow. He has brought me so far.

During this time in March 2016, our Sunday School class was doing a girls' bible study with the "Anointed, Transformed, Redeemed" study (side note: if you've never done it, DO IT! I will also be referring to that as ATR from here on out). I decided to glance back through my journal at the entries around this time last year. I'm just going to share a few with you, just to show you how the Lord works!

March 28
"I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord."                                                        Psalms 27:13-15

"The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in Him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise Him."     Psalms 28:7

March 29
After I wrote those verses, God broke me - again. He gave me more then I could handle.

March 30
[my thoughts from ATR that week] It was like Priscilla Shirer was talking directly to me!
"Remember Whose you are and who you are" - it is only because of Him that you've done anything in your life at all!
Who are you in Christ? We are established by Him! When God is your center, you are unstoppable.
I want to be known as someone after God's own heart who is ready to do His Will
{Side note: Y'all - this was like the day before God dropped the bomb on me of going overseas!!!}

April 1
I am beginning to wonder if God really does want me some where else soon
{Side note.. sorry...I won't keep doing this...ok, yes I probably will: Within the previous 2 weeks, four people had mentioned to me at separate times about leaving Montgomery and teaching elsewhere}. Today's bible study also talked about letting God have control and trying not to control because it only brings anxiety. Yes.
What does God want from me in the future (job & life)?
Read Psalms 31!!
v1-In thee, oh Lord, do I put my trust
v2-Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily: be thou my strong rock, for a house of defense to save me
*v3-For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me
v14-But I trusted in thee, oh Lord; I said, Thou art my God
v15-my times are in thy hand
v19-oh how great is thy goodness, which thou has laid up for them that fear you
*v24-be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord

April 5
Praying about teaching Internationally!!
[THERE IT IS!! This was after several days of freaking out!!] God has connected me with two different women who have international school connections and I have begun working on my applications.
2 Corinthians 3:5-6
"Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God
[little did I know how powerful that would be for me in the next few months/year]; Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament [the gospel]; not of the letter [the old covenant - the law], but of the spirit; for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life."
Excerpt for ATR that week:
"We must come to our situations (life, finances, singlenss, big job, decisions, etc) knowing that God equips for His purpose those He calls."
He calls. He establishes. He equips. He has specific plans.

"But by the Grace of God I am what I am..." 1 Cor 15:10

Y'all, God knew the plan from the start. Nothing...absolutely nothing...surprises Him! And how thankful we should be about that!! Praise the Lord that the Faithful Jehovah Elohim (Almighty Creator God) is all-knowing, all-seeing, and ever present!

He does, in fact, have everything under control.

Yet, we are continually in shock when something happens and we can see how it was connected to something a year ago (or even 10 years ago) that happened in our lives.

Yes, God knows.

And He does have a plan and a purpose for every little thing that is going on in your life.

[Final side note: If you don't journal, I would highly encourage you to start. It is just a great way to see the Lord's faithfulness woven in to all parts of your life. My journal entries are not long and eloquent...in fact, sometimes that are short and even silly to look back on. But it's worth it to be able to read back over how the Lord has been faithful.]

Thirty-seven

Thirty-seven...

...is "the normal human body temperature in degrees Celsius" (which I will be needing to review before moving to Hungary).

...is "the number of plays William Shakespeare is said to have written".

..."was the international dialing code of the German Democratic Republic (aka East Germany). Today the +37 prefix is shared by Lithuania (+370), Latvia (+371), Estonia (+372), Moldova (+373), Armenia (+374), Belarus (+375), Andorra (+376), Monaco (+377), San Marino (+378) and Vatican City (+379)" (some of which are close-ish neighbors to Hungary).
[Thank you, wikipedia...]

Thirty-seven is also the percentage of support that I have raised! Praise the Lord!
I had the honor of speaking in my home church of Lakeview Baptist in Auburn, AL this weekend. What a privilege it was to stand in the same pulpit as many of my modern-day heroes of faith, including my parents - who stood in the same pulpit twenty+ years ago, sharing about where God was leading their family. It's surreal that I'm the second generation to be loved on by that church, prayed for by that church, and supported by that church as I go overseas to do what God has called me to do! What a blessing!

To those of you who are already supporting me, thank you! To those of you who are interested, please e-mail me (hhocutt@teachbeyond.org), because I would LOVE to set up a time to tell you more about what I will be doing in Budapest. I have already sent out one newsletter, and am still trying to get the hang of it (...sorry...). So if you didn't receive that e-mail, message me and I will double check to make sure I have your e-mail set up correctly!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your prayers! The enemy is alive and well, and he clearly doesn't want me to continue down this path  (which makes me all the more motivated to continue down this path!)! Pray for strength to keep pushing through when things get hard. Pray for faith and trust in the ONLY THING that is constant - God! Pray for my current class, that I will be all-there for them and their families. Pray for our school as we push onward towards accreditation. (We should be finishing up at the end of March).

This song was sung on Sunday, and it resonates with me right now:

Precious cornerstone, sure foundation
You are faithful to the end
We are waiting, on You, Jesus
We believe You're all to us

Let the glory of Your name be the passion of the Church
Let the righteousness of God be a holy flame that burns
Let the saving love of Christ be the measure of our lives
We believe You're all to us

Only Son of God sent from Heaven
Hope and mercy at the cross
You are everything, You're the Promise
Jesus, You are all to us

When this passing world is over
We will see You face to face
And forever we will worship
Jesus, You are all to us

May Jesus be all to you, friend.

More updates to come!! 😊
